K-1 legend Ernesto Hoost recently announced that he would be opening a new gym in Japan to help train fighters for K-1, and he’ll have a new trainee when he opens. K-1 fighter and international star Tyrone Spong has left his long time trainer Lucien Carbin to work with Hoost. Spong joins Hoost’s Team Perfect alongside K-1 veteran Paul Slowinski and up and comer Ashwin Balrak.
Spong and Carbin worked together for years, but Spong has had a rough 2009, losing high profile fights to Gokhan Saki and Nathan Corbett. A change of scenery and styles may be just what he needs to get his career back on track. In Hoost, Spong will be training with a true legend of the game. Interestingly, like Spong, Hoost started his career as a small HW before settling in to the weight class, which could be very beneficial for Spong. Hoost as a coach does have his detractors though, as some argue that he makes all his fighters fight Hoost’s own more boxing oriented style, rather than play to the individual fighter’s strengths. No matter what, it is a large change for Spong and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. At this time, Spong’s next fight is unknown.
