Earlier this week we published the news that Jean-Claude Van Damme would take part in a professional Muay Thai match early next year against Thai boxing Olympic medalist Somluck Kamsing. Still no word from Van Damme’s camp regarding this news, however Kamsing confirmed the rumor to Thailand’s Siam Sport:
I never thought about this possibility at all, but all the sudden Van Damme’s team called me, saying they tracked me down from a hotel employee who knew me. They want me to fight with muaythai style, except the elbows because they don’t want his face to get bruised, because he is an actor.
At 36 years old, Kamsing will still come in significantly younger than the 48 year old Van Damme. Kamsing won the gold medal in boxing at the 1996 Summer Olympics competing as a Featherweight (57 kg, 126 lbs). He also competed in the Olympics in 1992, 2000, and 2004, although he did not medal. Van Damme does have previous professional fight experience, but has not fought professionally since 1980.
This fight is not associated with K-1 in any way, as some sites are erroneously reporting, and does not indicate that Van Damme will fight for K-1.
